Background
Finding patients with inherited colorectal cancer (CRC) can greatly help in managing their health. However, many people hesitate to get genetic testing for CRC, leading to low participation rates. As genetic testing becomes more common, we need better ways to help people make informed choices and increase the number of at-risk individuals who get tested.
Objective
This study aimed to see if a decision aid (DA) tool could help family members make informed choices about genetic testing for a patient with CRC.
Methods
We conducted a study with 82 family members of CRC patients. They were divided into two groups: one received the DA tool, and the other received standard care. We measured how well they made decisions based on their knowledge, confidence, and preparation. We also looked at how many chose genetic counseling and testing, their screening habits, lifestyle choices, anxiety, depression, quality of life, and satisfaction with the intervention. Data was collected at three points: before the intervention, right after, and three months later. The DA tool and follow-up assessments were delivered through WeChat.
Results
Those who used the DA tool showed significant improvements in:
- Knowledge about genetic testing
- Decisional conflict (feeling unsure about choices)
- Confidence in making decisions
- Healthier eating habits
- Overall healthy lifestyle scores
These improvements were noted both immediately after the intervention and three months later. However, no differences were found in other areas.
Conclusions
The DA tool appears to be a safe and effective way to help families make informed decisions about genetic testing. However, it needs further improvement and evaluation, possibly by using more advanced technology than WeChat.
Opportunities for Clinics and Patients
Based on the trial data, clinics can:
- Define measurable outcomes to track the effectiveness of decision aids.
- Set clear goals for increasing genetic testing uptake.
- Select AI tools that meet specific clinical needs.
- Implement changes step by step, starting with pilot projects to monitor results.
