Study Summary: Efficacy of Therapies for Interstitial Cystitis (IC) / Bladder Pain Syndrome (BPS)
Background
Despite previous studies, there is no complete review of treatment options for IC/BPS. This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of different therapies and identify factors that influence their success.
Methods
- Reviewed 70 trials with 3,651 patients
- Looked at symptoms like pain, urgency, frequency, and nocturia
- Used meta-analysis to compare treatments
Results
Certain treatments like instillation and intravesical injection showed significant improvements in pain and urgency. No single treatment showed significant improvement in all symptoms. Age and follow-up period were found to influence specific symptoms.
Conclusion
Combining therapies may be beneficial for IC patients, even though treatment is challenging. The study provides valuable insights into the effectiveness of IC treatments.
