Understanding Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD)
Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD) is a condition where individuals have uncontrolled gaming habits. This can lead to emotional problems, neglect of responsibilities, and harm to personal relationships. IGD is linked to challenges in brain function, particularly in areas responsible for decision-making and emotional control.
Purpose of the Study
This study investigates if individuals with IGD struggle with three key brain functions: inhibition (controlling impulses), updating (keeping information current), and shifting (adjusting focus). It also explores how a short mindfulness program might help improve these brain functions.
Study Details
The study will include 82 participants with IGD and 40 non-addicted gamers. They will be divided into two groups:
- Intervention Group: Will engage in a 7-day mindfulness training focusing on breathing exercises.
- Control Group: Will participate in muscle relaxation training.
Both groups will be assessed over seven time points, measuring brain activity, behavior, and emotional health.
Expected Outcomes
This research aims to show if mindfulness can help improve brain function in those with IGD, potentially leading to better treatment strategies. Key areas of focus include:
- Brain activity measurements
- Behavioral responses
- Self-reported feelings and gaming urges
- Overall mental health and personality traits
Goals for Clinics and Patients
Clinics should aim to:
- Define clear, measurable outcomes for patients with IGD.
- Utilize mindfulness training as a potential treatment option.
