Background
Parents of children with ADHD often face high stress levels, which worsened during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study aimed to see if a mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) program could help reduce this stress among Chinese parents during the pandemic.
Methods
This was a pilot study where parents of children aged 3-12 with ADHD were recruited. They were randomly divided into two groups: one received the MBSR program, and the other received usual care. All participants completed the program, showing a 100% attendance rate.
Results
About 66% of parents in the MBSR group felt satisfied with the program and found it helpful for reducing stress. The study showed significant stress reduction:
- Self-perceived stress scores dropped from 29.44 to 25.50 immediately after the program, and further to 24.72 one month later.
- Parental stress levels decreased from 74.50 to 68.94 right after the program, and to 67.50 one month later.
These results indicate that the MBSR program effectively reduced stress for parents of children with ADHD.
Conclusion
The study found that MBSR is a feasible and effective way to help reduce stress among parents of children with ADHD in Chinese culture. This program can enhance mental well-being for these parents.
Opportunities for Clinics and Patients
Based on the trial data, clinics can:
- Set clear goals for stress reduction using MBSR.
- Measure outcomes to track improvements in parental stress levels.
- Implement MBSR programs as part of their services for parents of children with ADHD.
