Dietary Supplement Intake in Women with Breast Cancer: SUCCESS C Trial Results
Background
There is limited evidence supporting the benefits of dietary supplements for breast cancer patients, and they are generally not recommended by treatment guidelines. This analysis aimed to evaluate the prevalence of dietary supplement intake among women before and after a breast cancer diagnosis.
Methods
Participants in the SUCCESS C lifestyle intervention study, which involved women with newly diagnosed intermediate- to high-risk breast cancer, completed two questionnaires on dietary supplement intake 24 months and 48 months after starting the lifestyle intervention. The study was registered under the EU Clinical Trials Register.
Results
Out of the participants, 20.2% reported taking dietary supplements before their diagnosis. After diagnosis, this percentage significantly increased to 56.4%. There were no differences in supplement intake between the intervention groups. The most commonly reported supplements were single or combined preparations of vitamins and minerals/trace elements. Notably, there was a 9-fold increase in vitamin D intake postdiagnosis.
Conclusion
There was a 3-fold increase in reported dietary supplement intake after a breast cancer diagnosis. These findings highlight the importance of educating patients about the use of dietary supplements, emphasizing their limited benefits and potential risks and treatment interactions.
