Early Detection and Management of Hearing Loss to Reduce Dementia Risk
Key Findings from the TACT Trial
Background: Hearing loss and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) both increase the risk of dementia in older adults. A previous study showed that hearing aids can help slow cognitive decline in older adults with hearing issues.
Methods: This pilot study involved older adults (aged 55 and above) with untreated hearing loss. Participants were divided into two groups: one received hearing aids and support, while the other received education on healthy aging and a referral for hearing tests. They were monitored for 6 months.
Results: A total of 58 participants joined the study. The group receiving hearing aids had a significantly higher fitting rate (83%) compared to the control group (21%). After 6 months, 75% of those with hearing aids used them daily, compared to only 22% in the control group.
Conclusion: The study shows that it is feasible to provide personalized hearing interventions to older adults with MCI. These promising results support further research with larger trials.
