Importance of Clinical Reasoning in Nursing

Nurses must effectively use their clinical reasoning skills, especially in critical care situations like cardiac emergencies. When they’re not able to do this, it can lead to serious patient safety issues. Hence, improving these skills during nursing education is crucial.

Study Objectives

This study focused on how game-based scenario writing can improve clinical reasoning in nursing students during their internships in challenging areas like cardiac care.

What Did We Do?

We conducted a straightforward study with 82 nursing students during their internships from June to September 2023. Students were divided into two groups: one group used game-based scenario writing, while the other group underwent regular training. We measured their clinical reasoning skills before and after the internship.

What Were the Results?

The group that used game-based scenario writing showed a significant improvement in their clinical reasoning skills after the internship. Their test scores improved more than those of the control group. This method proved to be effective in enhancing their learning experience.

Conclusions

Game-based scenario writing is a valuable teaching method for nursing education. It can greatly enhance clinical reasoning during internships in critical areas like cardiac emergencies.

Based on these findings, nursing educators should strongly consider using game-based methods to boost clinical reasoning skills in their programs. This approach can lead to better patient care in the future.
