Effects of Intensive Mask-Wearing on Postinfectious Cough

This study investigates the impact of wearing face masks for extended periods on patients suffering from postinfectious cough, a common issue that affects patients and adds financial strain. Traditional medication has not been very effective for this condition.
Study Methodology
A total of 46 patients with postinfectious cough were selected for this randomized controlled trial between November 2023 and February 2024. They were divided into two groups:
- Control Group: 21 patients receiving standard treatment.
- Experimental Group: 25 patients receiving standard treatment plus wearing medical masks for over 8 hours daily.
Patients were monitored every 3 days for 3 weeks to assess cough severity and mask-wearing compliance.

- Patients in the experimental group required fewer days to see improvement (10.1 days vs. 13.0 days).
- Medical costs were significantly lower for the experimental group (289.4 CNY vs. 717.5 CNY).
Conclusion
Wearing masks intensively was highly compliant among patients and significantly improved cough symptoms, reduced recovery time, and lowered medical expenses.
