EYE-ECG: An RCT of the influence of student characteristics and expert eye-tracking videos with cued retrospective reporting on students’ ECG interpretation skills

This study examined how expert eye-tracking videos can help medical students improve their ECG interpretation skills.

Objectives

Teaching ECG interpretation often uses visual aids, but students usually struggle with it. This study aimed to show how an expert’s gaze can be made visible through eye-tracking videos, potentially enhancing students’ skills.

Methods

A total of 91 medical students participated in a randomized controlled trial (RCT). They were divided into two groups:

  • Group 1: 47 students used eye-tracking videos with audio commentary.
  • Group 2: 44 students studied four clinical cases without videos.

Students’ ECG skills were assessed through pre- and post-tests. The study analyzed how the training and other factors, like prior experience, affected their skills.

Results

The eye-tracking training showed a small, non-significant improvement in knowledge compared to standard training. Interestingly, one clinical case stood out and needs further investigation.

Conclusion

Even a brief 9-minute session using expert gaze videos and commentary showed promise in improving ECG interpretation skills. The study also identified specific traits that help students benefit more from ECG training and suggested ways to enhance the learning experience.
