Implementation of Integrated Care for Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and Periodontitis in Germany: Study Protocol for a Practice-based and Cluster-randomized Trial
Background
Type 2 Diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and periodontitis have common risk factors and can impact each other. However, primary care and oral health care are currently separate and do not coordinate care for patients with both conditions. This trial aims to assess a new integrated care pathway for patients with T2DM and periodontitis.
Methods
The trial consists of two practice-based studies: one in dental care settings and the other in primary care settings. It involves dentists and general practitioners recruiting patients and collecting data at baseline, 12 months, and 24 months. The evaluation includes impact assessment, process evaluation, economic evaluation, and a Discrete-Choice-Experiment to identify provider’s payment preferences.
Discussion
If successful, the intervention will enable early detection of T2DM and periodontitis, leading to timely diagnosis and therapy, potentially improving patients’ quality of life and reducing healthcare costs.
Trial Registration
The study was prospectively registered at the German Clinical Trials Register under ID «DRKS00030587» on 3. July 2023.
