Background
The use of dental implants is growing, but many patients experience inflammation around these implants. This study explored how a special treatment called antibacterial dual-light photodynamic therapy (aPDT) can help reduce this inflammation.
Study Overview
We included 40 patients who were newly diagnosed with peri-implant disease. They were divided into two groups: one group received the aPDT treatment at home, while the other group focused on enhancing their self-care. The treatment lasted for four weeks, and we measured inflammation at the start, after two weeks, and after four weeks.
Key Findings
- In the treatment group, bleeding on probing (BOP) significantly decreased from 4.7 to 1.8.
- In contrast, the control group showed no significant change in BOP.
- Inflammatory markers also improved in the treatment group, showing a drop from 100 to 72, while the control group remained unchanged.
Conclusions
This study indicates that using dual-light aPDT regularly can effectively reduce inflammation in the tissues surrounding dental implants. This method represents a promising home care option for patients with implants.
