Study Overview
This study compares the effectiveness of intramuscular diclofenac and intravenous tramadol for relieving pain in patients with acute renal colic in northern Thailand.
Objective
The goal was to see which medication provided faster pain relief: 75 mg of diclofenac given by injection or 50 mg of tramadol given through an IV.
Methods
The study was carefully designed as a randomized, double-blind trial. Patients diagnosed with acute renal colic were split into two groups, one receiving diclofenac and the other tramadol. Pain relief was measured using a simple scale and patient feedback.
Results
A total of 68 patients participated, with 34 in each group. At the 120-minute mark:
- Diclofenac: 32 out of 34 patients (94%) reported pain relief.
- Tramadol: 22 out of 34 patients (65%) reported pain relief.
The results showed that diclofenac was significantly more effective, providing pain relief faster than tramadol by about 41.67 minutes.
Conclusion
Diclofenac 75 mg IM offers quicker and more effective pain relief compared to tramadol 50 mg IV.
