Background and Objectives
Chronic pelvic pain (CPP) is a common issue linked to pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). While acupuncture is often used to manage CPP, there hasn’t been enough research on using laser stimulation at specific acupuncture points. This study aimed to explore how laser treatment affects pain and quality of life in women with PID.
Study Overview
Thirty-six women with CPP due to PID were divided into two groups. Both groups received non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). The study group also received low-level laser treatment at specific acupuncture points for six weeks. Evaluations were conducted before and after the treatment.
Methods of Measurement
The quality of life was measured using the 12-item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-12). Pain sensitivity and intensity were assessed using a pressure algometer and a visual analog scale for pain (VAS-P).
Results
The results showed significant improvements in the study group:
- Reduced pain intensity (VAS score decreased by 1.00)
- Improved quality of life (SF-12 score increased by 9.11)
- Increased pain threshold at various points in the body
Conclusions
Laser treatment at sensitized acupuncture points significantly reduces pain and enhances quality of life for women suffering from CPP due to PID. This therapy could be an important part of rehabilitation for these patients.
Opportunities for Clinics
