Feasibility of Exergaming for Upper Extremity Rehabilitation in People with Multiple Sclerosis: Prospective Clinical Trial

Background

Exergaming has been suggested as a more motivational rehabilitation method for people with multiple sclerosis (MS). However, the lack of specific scenarios designed for people with MS is a major disadvantage.

Objectives

This study aims to assess the feasibility of exergaming developed specifically for people with MS.

Methods

  • Collaboration with physiotherapists, doctors, and computer engineers to develop exergaming scenarios
  • 30 participants with definite MS diagnoses included
  • Custom-made exergames applied for one session using Microsoft Kinect
  • Assessment of participants’ satisfaction with the system and exergaming using the User Satisfaction Evaluation Questionnaire

Results

  • Mean age: 41.5
  • Mean Expanded Disability Status Scale: 4.5 (range 0-7)
  • Mean disease duration: 10.0 years
  • 20 patients were relapsing-remitting, and 10 were secondary-progressive
  • User Satisfaction Evaluation Questionnaire scores:
    • Helpfulness for rehabilitation: 4.33 (SD = 0.84)
    • Not disturbing: 1.63 (SD = 1.1)
    • Understandability: 4.50 (SD = 1.07)
    • Easiness to control: 4.0 (SD = 0.91)
    • Enjoyability: 4.33 (SD = 0.84)

Conclusion

The custom-made exergaming scenario showed feasibility in upper extremity rehabilitation in MS. Further research is needed to investigate its effectiveness in the rehabilitation of upper limbs.
