Evaluation of a FlpA Glycoconjugate Vaccine to Reduce Campylobacter jejuni Colonisation in Chickens

Published in Vaccines (Basel) on April 9, 2024

Campylobacter is a common cause of stomach illness in humans, often linked to eating poultry. This study aimed to test a vaccine to reduce Campylobacter in chickens, which could lower the risk of human illness.

The vaccine included a protein called FlpA, combined with up to ten sugar molecules from Campylobacter. Previous trials used FlpA with only two sugar molecules, so this study used a higher dose.

Chickens given the vaccine were exposed to Campylobacter, but the vaccine did not protect them from getting sick. However, the vaccinated chickens did produce more antibodies against FlpA, and some antibodies against the sugar molecules.

While other studies have shown success with similar vaccines, this study suggests that the vaccine’s effectiveness may depend on specific factors in the chickens or the study itself.
