Mediation Analysis of Obesity and Adiponectin Association with Postmenopausal Breast Cancer Risk
Nutrients. 2024 Jun 30;16(13):2098
Summary: The study explored the relationship between obesity, adiponectin, and postmenopausal breast cancer risk. It investigated whether adiponectin or other biomarkers mediate the effect of body mass index (BMI) on postmenopausal breast cancer risk in a cohort study nested in the IBIS-II Prevention Trial.
Key Findings: The results showed that both the 12-month increase in adiponectin and BMI were associated with breast cancer risk, with a 40% reduction in risk for women with a 12-month increase in adiponectin. The study also observed a significantly higher risk of breast cancer events in obese women with decreased adiponectin.
Implications: The findings suggest that raising adiponectin levels could be an attractive target for postmenopausal breast cancer prevention.
