Treatment of Post-Stroke Fatigue: A Simple Overview

Objective

The study aimed to see how a specific acupuncture technique affects fatigue in patients who have had a stroke.

Methods

Sixty-four patients with post-stroke fatigue were divided into two groups:

  • Control Group: Received standard treatment plus Tongdu Tiaoshen acupuncture therapy.
  • Observation Group: Received the same treatment as the control group, but also underwent a special acupuncture technique using elongated needles.

Both groups received acupuncture once a day for four weeks. Various scales and tests were used to measure fatigue, sleep quality, anxiety, depression, and motor function before and after treatment.

Results

Both groups showed improvement in fatigue, anxiety, depression, sleep quality, and motor function after treatment. However, the observation group had:

  • Lower scores in fatigue and anxiety scales.
  • Higher scores in motor function assessments.
  • A total clinical effective rate of 83.3%, compared to 73.3% in the control group.

Conclusion

The special acupuncture technique helped reduce fatigue, anxiety, and depression while improving sleep and motor function in patients with post-stroke fatigue. This may be linked to reduced inflammation in the body.
