Clinical Study on Moxibustion and Cisplatin for Malignant Pleural Effusion
Objective
The study aimed to assess the effectiveness of combining heat-sensitive moxibustion with intrapleural cisplatin infusion compared to cisplatin infusion alone in treating malignant pleural effusion (MPE).
Methods
Forty patients with MPE were randomly divided into two groups: an observation group (20 patients) and a control group (20 patients). The control group received a weekly cisplatin injection for four weeks. The observation group received the same cisplatin treatment but also underwent heat-sensitive moxibustion for 30 to 90 minutes daily, excluding weekends.
Results
- Both groups showed reduced pleural effusion volume after treatment.
- The observation group had a greater reduction in pleural effusion than the control group.
- Karnofsky Performance Status (KPS) scores improved significantly in both groups, with the observation group showing higher scores.
- TCM symptom scores (including dyspnea, cough, and chest pain) decreased more in the observation group.
- The effective response rate was 65.0% in the observation group versus 30.0% in the control group.
- Lower incidences of bone marrow suppression (15% vs. 55%) and gastrointestinal reactions (30% vs. 65%) were reported in the observation group.
Conclusion
The combination of heat-sensitive moxibustion with cisplatin infusion is more effective than cisplatin alone, improving pleural effusion and daily living activities while reducing side effects. This treatment strategy enhances chemotherapy’s effectiveness while mitigating its toxicity.
