The clinical and microbiological efficacy of a zinc-citrate/hydroxyapatite/potassium-citrate containing toothpaste: a double-blind randomized controlled clinical trial

The Efficacy of a New Toothpaste: A Clinical Trial Overview

Study Purpose

This study aimed to test the effectiveness of two types of toothpaste, one with added ingredients like zinc-citrate (ZCT), hydroxyapatite (HAP), and potassium-citrate (KCit), and one with only fluoride. We wanted to see how well these toothpastes reduce bacteria, tooth sensitivity, plaque buildup, and gingivitis, as well as how satisfied patients were with them.

Methodology

We selected healthy adults and randomly divided them into two groups (50 participants each):

  • Experimental Group: Toothpaste with ZCT, HAP, KCit, and fluoride.
  • Control Group: Toothpaste with only fluoride.

We measured the levels of Streptococcus mutans bacteria, plaque, and gingival health at the start and after 4 weeks. Patients also completed a questionnaire about their sensitivity and satisfaction before and after the trial.

Results

After 4 weeks:

  • Both toothpastes significantly reduced S. mutans levels (p = 0.001).
  • The Experimental group showed a greater reduction in S. mutans (p = 0.014).
  • No significant difference was found between the groups regarding plaque and gingival index (p > 0.05).
  • Patients in the Experimental group reported less tooth sensitivity (p < 0.001).

Conclusions

Both types of toothpaste were effective against bacteria, but the one with ZCT, HAP, KCit, and fluoride was more successful in reducing S. mutans levels. This toothpaste is recommended for patients at risk of cavities and those experiencing tooth sensitivity.

Clinical Relevance

The toothpaste with ZCT, HAP, KCit, and fluoride can be a valuable option for patients prone to dental issues and sensitivity.
