Effectiveness of Scapula Mobilization Technique for Cervical Pain

Study Overview

This study investigates whether scapula mobilization can improve nerve sensitivity in patients with neck pain (cervicalgia). Cervicalgia is localized neck pain caused by nerve root compression, often linked to muscles around the scapula.

Methods

We recruited 60 adults with cervicalgia and a positive upper limb neural test (ULNT1). Participants were divided into two groups:

  • Experimental Group: Received scapula mobilization.
  • Control Group: Received a different treatment with electrodes on the neck and mobilization of the opposite ankle.

We measured pain levels, elbow extension movement, and hand grip strength.

Results

The experimental group showed:

  • Increased Strength: (p = 0.01)
  • Improved Elbow Extension: (p = 0.01)
  • Reduced Pain: (p < 0.01)

These changes were significant compared to the control group.

Conclusion

The scapula mobilization technique significantly improves nerve sensitivity and reduces pain in patients with cervicalgia and a positive ULNT1.
