Teach-Back Educational Strategy for Breast Cancer Knowledge
Background
This study explores how a “teach-back” educational method helps women with low health literacy understand breast cancer better.
Methods
The research was conducted at the Farabi Comprehensive Health Services Center in Sanandaj, Iran, from December 2020 to October 2022. A total of 84 women, who struggled with health literacy, were randomly divided into two groups: one received the teach-back education while the other was a control group. The teaching focused on:
– Breast cancer risk factors
– Symptoms and signs of breast cancer
– Early detection methods, including breast self-examination
– Importance of regular screening
The intervention group attended three 20-minute face-to-face sessions over three weeks. The study measured knowledge before and eight weeks after the sessions using a valid tool.
Results
The results showed a significant increase in breast cancer knowledge for the intervention group compared to the control group, with a P value of less than 0.001. There were also noteworthy improvements in understanding diagnosis techniques.
Conclusion
The teach-back educational strategy effectively increased breast cancer knowledge among women with low health literacy.
