Investigating the effect of the educational intervention based on the Health Belief Model on the knowledge and beliefs of Yemeni teachers in the use of breast cancer screening: a randomized controlled trial study

Investigating the Impact of Educational Interventions on Breast Cancer Screening

Study Overview

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women. Teachers have an important role in encouraging healthy habits, such as breast cancer screening. This study looked at how an educational program based on the Health Belief Model (HBM) could improve knowledge and beliefs about breast cancer screening among female Yemeni teachers in Malaysia.

Study Method

We conducted a cluster-randomized controlled trial with 180 participants from 12 schools. Participants were split into intervention and control groups. The intervention group attended a 90-minute educational session, with follow-up assessments at different intervals using validated Arabic questionnaires. We analyzed the data using SPSS software to see the differences between the groups over time.

Key Findings

Initially, there were no significant differences between the groups. However, after the intervention, the intervention group showed:

  • Higher rates of breast self-examination (BSE) with an adjusted odds ratio (AOR) of 17.51.
  • Increased clinical breast examination (CBE) rates with an AOR of 2.75.

Over six months, BSE performance improved significantly, and CBE rates also increased. Additionally, the intervention group reported better knowledge and beliefs about breast cancer screening, including greater confidence in performing BSE and fewer perceived barriers.

Conclusion

The HBM-based educational intervention successfully improved breast cancer screening practices, knowledge, and reduced barriers among Yemeni teachers in Malaysia. This shows that targeted educational programs can effectively promote cancer screening in underserved populations.
