Efficacy of Two-Week Treatment for Helicobacter Pylori Infection
Introduction
Helicobacter pylori is a common stomach infection that can lead to serious issues like gastritis and gastric ulcers. The World Health Organization has identified it as a major cause of gastric cancer. In Iran, about 54% of the population is infected. This study looked at a four-drug treatment to see how effective it is in eliminating this infection.
Methods
We studied patients with indigestion who tested positive for H. pylori through endoscopy and biopsy at Shariati Hospital from March 2022 to June 2023. A total of 228 patients were included after meeting specific criteria. They were randomly divided into two groups:
- Case Group: Received a combination of bismuth, omeprazole, amoxicillin, and ciprofloxacin for two weeks.
- Control Group: Received omeprazole, clarithromycin, and amoxicillin for ten days.
After one month, a stool test was done to check for H. pylori eradication.
Results
The case group showed the following endoscopic findings:
- Gastritis: 92%
- Duodenal ulcer: 1%
- Esophagitis: 3%
- Gastric ulcer: 2%
The eradication rates were:
- Case Group: 81%
- Control Group: 89%
Patients with epigastric pain and smokers had significantly lower eradication rates.
Conclusion
Despite advancements in treatment, some patients may still not respond well. Future studies should compare different treatment regimens to find the most effective options for H. pylori eradication.
