Enhancing Motor Function in Children with Cerebral Palsy
Study Overview
This study investigates how combining Pediatric Tuina (PT) with traditional rehabilitation affects motor skills in children with cerebral palsy (CP).
Methodology
In this controlled trial, 115 children aged 1 month to 13 years with CP participated. They were divided into two groups:
- Experimental Group: 57 children received PT along with standard rehabilitation.
- Control Group: 58 children received only conventional rehabilitation.
The Gross Motor Function Measure (GMFM-88) was used to assess their motor skills at the beginning and end of the 3-month treatment period.
Results
The findings revealed that children who received PT along with standard rehabilitation showed significantly better improvements in motor function compared to those who received only traditional methods. Key improvements included:
- Supine and Rolling: Experimental group scored 47.88 vs. 42.86 in control group.
- Sitting: Experimental group scored 45.16 vs. 35.59 in control group.
- Total Score: Experimental group scored 147.88 vs. 118.90 in control group.
Overall, there was a significant increase in scores after the combination therapy (from 105.39 to 147.88, P = 0.045).
Conclusion
The use of PT alongside conventional rehabilitation significantly improves motor function in children with CP. The study suggests that more research is needed to explore the full potential of PT in treating CP.
