Effect of Cooled Haemodialysis on Cognition in Patients with End-Stage Kidney Disease (ECHECKED)
Study Overview
This study looked at whether cooler haemodialysis can help improve brain function in patients with severe kidney disease. Cognitive issues are common in these patients, and we wanted to explore this potential solution.
Study Design
We randomly assigned 90 patients to receive either standard haemodialysis at 36.5 °C or a cooler version at 35 °C. The main focus was on changes in cognitive scores after 12 months. We also examined factors like patient recruitment, reasons for dropping out, and overall quality of life.
Key Findings
- Out of 334 patients screened, 160 were eligible, but 99 chose not to participate, mainly due to extra study visits.
- Only 61 patients agreed to join, and 43 were randomly assigned to the two groups.
- 27 patients completed the trial, while others withdrew or could not attend due to the pandemic.
- The cooler dialysis was generally well tolerated, but there was no significant improvement in cognitive scores between the two groups.
- No serious side effects were reported during the study.
Challenges and Learnings
The COVID-19 pandemic impacted the study, increasing the dropout rate to 27%. Many patients were deterred by the extra visits required. This experience will guide future studies in this area to enhance recruitment and retention strategies.
