Effect of transcutaneous electro-stimulation in postoperative rehabilitation pain treatment in thoracic surgery: a randomized clinical trial

Effect of Transcutaneous Electro-Stimulation on Postoperative Pain in Thoracic Surgery

Background

Chest pain after thoracic surgery is a challenging issue. Proper pain management is essential to prevent complications like ineffective coughing and shallow breathing.

Methods

This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of transcutaneous electrical stimulation (TENS) in managing postoperative pain after thoracotomy. A total of 109 patients participated in a randomized study. They received physiotherapy for 3 weeks after leaving the hospital. Patients were divided into three groups: experimental (37 patients), control (35 patients), and placebo (37 patients). The experimental and placebo groups received TENS during their physiotherapy sessions. Pain levels and lung function were assessed before and after treatment.

Results

The experimental group showed a significant improvement in pain control compared to the control group, with a difference of 16.77 points (p < 0.001). Lung function tests indicated a notable improvement in the experimental group, with increases of 27.11% in FVC and 28.68% in FEV1 (p < 0.001).

Conclusion

Using TENS alongside physiotherapy significantly improves pain management and lung function in patients after thoracic surgery, with no side effects reported. These results support the use of TENS in postoperative care and could help develop effective pain management programs in healthcare settings.
