Electronic Patient-Reported Outcome System in Cardiovascular Care
Importance
Patient-reported outcomes (PRO) are important for cardiovascular care, but their use has faced significant challenges.
Objective
This study aimed to evaluate how an electronic PRO (ePRO) monitoring system can improve the quality of cardiovascular care.
Study Overview
This pilot randomized clinical trial took place in Japan from October 2022 to October 2023. It involved patients over 18 years old with heart failure, atrial fibrillation, or coronary artery disease. Participants were randomly assigned to either the ePRO group or a control group that received standard care.
Intervention
Patients in the ePRO group filled out questionnaires on tablets before their visits, while the control group received usual care. Both groups attended five outpatient visits over four months.
Main Outcomes
We measured patient satisfaction, quality of information from physicians, and disease knowledge using various questionnaires.
Results
Of the 50 patients, 48 completed the study. The ePRO group showed significant improvements in patient satisfaction and the quality of information from physicians compared to the control group.
Conclusions
The ePRO monitoring system improved communication between patients and physicians, making cardiovascular care more patient-centered.
