Low-Intensity Online Intervention for Mental Distress Among Help-Seeking Young People in Hong Kong: A Randomized Clinical Trial

Low-Intensity Online Intervention for Mental Distress Among Young People in Hong Kong

Study Overview

This study looks at the mental health issues faced by young people in Hong Kong. Traditional therapy methods often struggle due to a lack of staff, time constraints, and low participation rates.

Objective

The goal was to assess how effective a low-intensity online intervention is for young individuals (ages 12-30) dealing with moderate to severe mental distress.

Study Design

Conducted from May 2022 to September 2023, the trial involved 120 participants who reported moderate to severe distress. They were divided into two groups:

  • Intervention Group: Received 4 weekly personalized online sessions focusing on stress management, sleep, or problem-solving.
  • Control Group: Received weekly mental health tips via text messages.

Main Findings

Both groups showed improvements in mental health, but:

  • The intervention group experienced significantly greater reductions in general stress and negative emotions.
  • They also showed improved resilience compared to the control group.
  • However, the differences in depression and anxiety scores were not statistically significant.

Conclusions

The low-intensity online intervention did not significantly alleviate distress but had positive effects on stress reduction and resilience. This suggests it could be a viable option for youth mental health, although more research is needed.
