Improving Emotional Availability in Mother-Toddler Relationships
Study Overview
This study looked at how the Tuning in to Toddlers (TOTS) parenting program can help mothers and toddlers connect emotionally. The program was tested with parents of toddlers aged 18-36 months in Melbourne, Australia.
Methodology
Parents were divided into two groups: one group participated in the TOTS program, while the other group waited without any intervention. The study involved 99 mother-toddler pairs, with 50 in the intervention group and 49 in the control group. They were observed before starting the program and again after 12 months.
Key Findings
- Mothers in the TOTS program showed significant improvements in being sensitive to their toddlers’ needs (p = 0.004).
- More mothers and toddlers in the program reliably improved in maternal structuring (p = 0.013) and child responsiveness (p = 0.042).
- In contrast, the control group showed a decline in maternal sensitivity (p = 0.001) and non-intrusiveness (p = 0.040).
Conclusion
This study suggests that the TOTS program can positively impact emotional connections between mothers and toddlers.
