Understanding Recovery After General Anesthesia
Background
Recovering from general anesthesia can be tricky. Patients need to be awake enough to follow instructions and answer questions about their thinking skills. Current tests depend on how well patients can understand and speak. However, we haven’t looked closely at how anesthesia affects speech and language. This study introduces a new way to evaluate these skills after surgery and compares it to a standard cognitive test.
Methods
We studied 48 patients who had general anesthesia for non-heart and non-brain surgeries. Before surgery, we gave them our new speech-language test and a standard cognitive test. We did the same tests again after surgery. We used different versions of the speech-language test before and after surgery. We also compared results from two groups of patients to see if their scores changed.
Results
After surgery, one group had lower scores on the cognitive test compared to the other group. We found that some speech skills, like telling a story and saying words quickly, got worse after surgery. However, understanding and naming things stayed about the same. Both groups showed changes in their speech skills after surgery.
Conclusions
The new speech-language test showed that patients had trouble speaking fluently after anesthesia, but they could still understand and repeat sentences well. These issues are similar to a specific type of speech problem.
