Background
Quick diagnosis is essential for treating acute spinal cord injuries (SCI). We believe that a special blood test can help diagnose SCI, measure how serious the injury is, and predict long-term recovery.
Methods
We developed a blood test that looks for specific DNA markers in the blood of patients with acute SCI. We also analyzed proteins in the blood to see how they relate to SCI and recovery after six months.
Results
Our blood test successfully detected spinal cord DNA in 50 patients with acute SCI. The results showed that higher levels of this DNA were found in patients with more severe injuries. We identified four key proteins that, when combined with the DNA test, created the Spinal Cord Injury Index (SCII). This index is very effective in diagnosing SCI and predicting recovery.
Conclusion
Our findings suggest that measuring spinal cord DNA and protein changes in the blood can greatly improve how we diagnose and predict outcomes for SCI patients.
Opportunities for Clinics and Patients
By using this multi-analyte blood test, clinics can:
- Set clear goals for diagnosing and managing SCI.
- Use AI tools that match their clinical needs for better patient outcomes.
- Start small with pilot projects to track the effectiveness of the blood test and its impact on patient care.
