Purpose
Pathologists diagnose prostate cancer using special stained slides from needle biopsies. Some labs use expensive tests for every case, which can cost more than what they get paid. This study looked at whether using an AI tool can help reduce these costs while still keeping diagnosis safe.
Methods
Patients suspected of having prostate cancer were divided into two groups. One group (control) had their slides examined using traditional methods. The other group (intervention) used an AI tool to help decide when to use additional tests. The main goal was to see how much the AI reduced the need for these extra tests.
Results
Out of 237 slides from 82 patients, 143 slides showed prostate cancer. The use of AI significantly lowered the number of extra tests needed, which saved about €1,700 in costs. Pathologists using AI felt more confident in their diagnoses compared to those who didn’t. The time taken to review slides was similar for both groups.
Conclusion
This study shows that using AI can help detect prostate cancer while cutting costs for additional tests. This supports the idea of using AI in clinical settings for better efficiency and safety.
