Aim of the Study
This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of using laser treatment combined with sinus curettage against using curettage alone for treating pilonidal sinus disease (PSD). We looked at postoperative complications, how well wounds healed, and the chances of the disease coming back. We also wanted to find out what factors might affect wound healing and recurrence after surgery.
Patients and Methods
The study included patients diagnosed with PSD from February 2019 to September 2022. Patients were randomly divided into two groups: one group received laser treatment plus curettage (L/C; 40 patients), and the other group received only curettage (C; 40 patients). We collected information about their demographics, smoking habits, other health issues, and details about their PSD.
Results
Both groups were similar in age and gender. The results showed no significant differences in postoperative pain, discharge, bleeding, wound healing issues after 30 days, or recurrence after 6 months. However, we found that higher body weight and more PSD openings were linked to wound healing problems and recurrence. Additionally, having a previous recurrence was also associated with a higher chance of recurrence.
Conclusion
While combining laser therapy with curettage showed some potential benefits, these were not statistically significant. Higher body weight and more openings were linked to worse healing and recurrence, and prior recurrences were also a risk factor for coming back within 6 months.
Opportunities Based on Trial Data
To improve treatment for pilonidal sinus disease, clinics can focus on:
- Identifying patients with higher body weight or multiple openings for targeted interventions.
- Monitoring patients with a history of recurrence closely.
Measurable Outcomes
Clinics should set clear goals to evaluate the benefits of adding laser ablation to curettage, such as:
- Reduction in postoperative complications.
- Improvement in wound healing rates.
- Lower recurrence rates within 6 months.
Implementing AI Solutions
To enhance clinical outcomes, consider starting a pilot project using AI tools to track results based on the study findings. This can help in understanding the real-world impact of combining laser therapy with curettage.
