Implementation of Site-Specific Hepatitis C Virus Treatment Workflows for Vulnerable, High-Risk Populations: A Prospective Single-Arm Trial

Hepatitis C Treatment for Vulnerable Populations

Introduction

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) can be effectively treated with new medications, but many vulnerable groups struggle to access this treatment.

Objective

This study aimed to evaluate how well specific treatment plans work for vulnerable populations in Austin, Texas.

Methods

We enrolled patients diagnosed with chronic hepatitis C and assessed their treatment journey through various stages, including prescription, initiation, completion, assessment for cure, and achieving cure.

Results

Out of 62 participants:

  • 89% had experienced homelessness.
  • 94% had used drugs.
  • 66% were prescribed treatment.
  • 49% started treatment.
  • 38% completed treatment.
  • 14% were assessed for cure.
  • 10% achieved a cure.

Conclusions

There were significant gaps in the treatment process. We need better strategies to engage patients in care and reduce treatment delays. Potential solutions include:

  • Patient outreach initiatives.
  • Patient navigation services.
  • Fast-track testing and treatment protocols.
  • Removing financial barriers to access medications.

Next Steps

To improve HCV treatment for vulnerable populations:

  • Define measurable outcomes and set clear goals for clinics and patients.
  • Select AI tools that fit specific clinical needs.
  • Implement changes step by step, starting with pilot projects and tracking results using AI solutions.
