Study Overview
This study compares two treatments for a condition called primary acquired nasolacrimal duct obstruction (NLDO), which affects tear drainage from the eye. The two treatments are:
- External Dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR)
- Canalicular Silicone Intubation with Mitomycin C (MMC)
Study Details
In this research, 60 patients diagnosed with NLDO were studied at Menoufia University Hospital in Egypt from June 2021 to July 2023. Patients were divided into two groups:
- 30 patients underwent external DCR
- 26 patients received silicone intubation with MMC
The outcomes were evaluated six months after treatment.
Results
After six months:
- The success rate for external DCR was 90%
- The success rate for silicone intubation with MMC was 80.7%
Both treatments showed similar effectiveness, with no significant difference in success rates.
Conclusion
Silicone intubation with MMC is a safe and effective alternative to external DCR. It is less invasive, easier to perform, and takes less time.
Practical Applications
Based on the study, clinics can consider the following:
- Set clear goals for treatment outcomes.
- Identify measurable results to track patient progress.
- Implement AI tools to enhance clinical decision-making.
- Start with pilot projects to test new methods and monitor their effectiveness.
