Factorial design study of self-management using Dnurse App in T2DM patients

Background

More patients are using diabetes apps on their smartphones to manage their condition. However, there is limited research on the effectiveness of these apps in China.

Objective

This study aimed to assess how well a popular diabetes app helps Chinese patients with type 2 diabetes manage their blood sugar levels.

Methods

The study was conducted in two hospitals in Chengdu, China, with patients aged 18 and older diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Participants were randomly assigned to one of four groups:

  • Group 1: Usual care
  • Group 2: Telephone follow-up
  • Group 3: App usage
  • Group 4: App usage with telephone follow-up

After 6 months, the main outcome measured was blood sugar control (HbA1c), along with blood pressure, body mass index, blood sugar monitoring frequency, and app satisfaction.

Results

A total of 273 patients participated, with 220 completing the study. While there was no significant difference in blood sugar control among the groups, the app users showed better results. The app groups also had lower blood pressure. Participants rated their satisfaction with the app highly.

Conclusions

The diabetes app appears to help improve blood sugar management and reduce blood pressure in patients. Users reported high satisfaction, suggesting it is a useful tool for self-management in type 2 diabetes.

Opportunities for Clinics and Patients

Based on the trial data, clinics can:

  • Set measurable goals for patient outcomes, such as improved HbA1c levels.
  • Choose AI tools that align with specific clinical needs for diabetes management.
  • Implement the app in a step-by-step manner, starting with pilot projects to track effectiveness.
