Does Creatine Cause Hair Loss? A 12-Week Study
Background: Creatine is a popular supplement that helps increase muscle strength and mass. Some people worry it might lead to hair loss by increasing a hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT). However, there has been no clear evidence showing how creatine affects hair health. This study aimed to see how 12 weeks of creatine supplementation impacts hormones and hair health in young men.
Methods:
Forty-five young men aged 18-40 who regularly lift weights were chosen for the study. They were split into two groups: one took creatine (5 g/day), and the other took a placebo (5 g of maltodextrin/day). Participants continued their usual diets and workout routines. Blood samples were taken before and after the 12 weeks to check levels of total testosterone, free testosterone, and DHT. Hair health was measured using specific tests to assess hair density and thickness.
Results:
Thirty-eight participants completed the study. No significant differences were found between the creatine and placebo groups regarding hormone levels or hair health. Although total testosterone levels increased and free testosterone levels decreased in both groups, these changes were not linked to the creatine supplement. Importantly, there were no significant changes in DHT levels or hair growth between the two groups.
Conclusion:
This study is the first to directly investigate hair health in relation to creatine supplementation. The findings provide strong evidence that creatine does not contribute to hair loss.
