Using structural equation model to analyse the effect of psychological pressure on the patients with essential hypertension blood pressure and blood biochemical indicators

Background

Essential hypertension (EH) is influenced by both environmental and genetic factors. Many risk factors exist, and psychological stress is believed to play a role in developing EH.

Methods

We studied 600 patients at Ningbo Medical Treatment Center from January 2018 to December 2021. We collected data on blood pressure, blood lipids, and stress levels using the Chinese Perceived Stress Scale (CPSS). Patients were divided into four groups based on their psychological stress levels:

  • High Psychological Pressure Hypertension Group (HPPH)
  • Low Psychological Pressure Hypertension Group (LPPH)
  • High Psychological Pressure Control Group (HPPC)
  • Low Psychological Pressure Control Group (LPPC)

We used structural equation modeling (SEM) to analyze how psychological stress affects blood pressure and other health indicators.

Results

Our findings showed that:

  • Blood pressure and biochemical markers were significantly higher in the HPPH group compared to the other groups.
  • Psychological stress had a clear impact on blood pressure and lipid levels.
  • Higher psychological pressure was linked to worse health outcomes, including higher levels of Ang II and aldosterone.

Conclusion

This research indicates that psychological stress is a significant factor in essential hypertension and could be a target for better management of the condition.
