A Preliminary Study on Improving Electronic Colonoscopy
Background
Colonoscopy is an important tool for screening colorectal cancer and routine health checks, becoming more common each year. In China, nurses typically assist doctors by applying pressure to the patient’s abdomen during the procedure, helping to make access to the colon easier.
Study Purpose
This study aimed to create and test a new, removable lap band to help with colonoscopy. The goal was to reduce the need for nurse assistance, use resources more effectively, and improve the overall efficiency of the procedure.
Study Details
- Participants: 150 individuals from a hospital’s endoscopy department, divided into two groups.
- Study Period: March to September 2023.
- Key Metrics: Insertion time, nurse assistance, pain levels, and blood pressure changes.
Results
- The experimental group using the lap band had a significantly shorter insertion time (2.5 minutes) compared to the control group (3 minutes).
- Fewer nurse assists were needed in the experimental group (24%) compared to the control group (41.3%).
- Patients in the experimental group reported less pain, with scores of 2.19 compared to 0.89 in the control group.
- No significant differences in blood pressure changes were observed between the groups.
Conclusion
This study shows that the new pressurized lap band can improve the efficiency of colonoscopy, lower patient pain levels, and make better use of medical resources.
