Acute cardiovascular responses of postmenopausal women to resistance training sessions differing in set configuration: A study protocol for a crossover trial

Acute Cardiovascular Responses of Postmenopausal Women to Resistance Training Sessions

Study Overview

This study will investigate how different types of resistance training affect cardiovascular health in postmenopausal women. Resistance training is often recommended to help with hormonal changes during menopause, but there are risks associated with intense exercises. This study aims to clarify these effects for better health guidance.

Participants and Method

We will involve 60 physically active postmenopausal women, divided into two groups: 30 with normal blood pressure and 30 with high blood pressure. Participants will undergo a medical examination and a familiarization session before engaging in three training sessions designed to test different exercise formats.

Exercise Sessions

Each session will involve 36 repetitions of four exercises: leg press, bench press, leg curl, and lat pull-down. The training will vary by set configuration:

  • 9 sets of 4 repetitions with short recovery
  • 6 sets of 6 repetitions with moderate recovery
  • 4 sets of 9 repetitions with longer recovery

Evaluation Metrics

We will measure several cardiovascular indicators:

  • Arterial stiffness
  • Heart rate and effort perception
  • Muscle performance metrics
  • Metabolic responses such as lactate levels

The results will help us understand the differences in responses between women with normal and high blood pressure.

Importance of the Study

This research fills a gap in knowledge about how resistance training impacts the cardiovascular system of postmenopausal women. It could lead to better training recommendations tailored to their health needs.
