Antibacterial Therapy for Acute Streptococcal Tonsillopharyngitis: Results of a Comparative Clinical Trial
Background
Acute tonsillopharyngitis is a common respiratory tract infection. Penicillin antibiotics like amoxicillin + clavulanic acid are often prescribed for bacterial causes. Dispersible forms of antibiotics have advantages over film-coated tablets, with better pharmacokinetic parameters, increasing effectiveness, safety, and patient compliance.
Aim
To compare the effectiveness and safety of Amoxicillin + Clavulanic acid EXPRESS in dispersible tablets with amoxicillin with clavulanic acid in film-coated tablets for treating acute streptococcal tonsillopharyngitis.
Materials and Methods
A randomized comparative clinical study involved 60 adult patients diagnosed with acute streptococcal tonsillopharyngitis. Group 1 received Amoxicillin + Clavulanic acid EXPRESS, while Group 2 received Amoxiclav. Various assessments and tests were performed to evaluate the treatment outcomes.
Results
Recovery occurred in 96.6% of patients in Group 1 and 93.3% in Group 2. Fever regression was higher in Group 1 by the 3rd day. Both treatment groups showed improvement in symptoms by the 10th day. The incidence of adverse reactions was lower in Group 1.
Conclusion
Amoxicillin + Clavulanic acid EXPRESS demonstrated high therapeutic efficacy comparable to Amoxiclav, with a significantly higher safety profile.
