Summary of Clinical Trial: Bystander interaction with a novel multipurpose medical drone: A simulation trial
Introduction
Medical drones are new technology that can help in emergencies. Lay rescuers use these drones, but we don’t know much about how people interact with them and the best way to design them.
Methods
- 24 simulations of adult out-of-hospital cardiac arrest and pediatric anaphylaxis were done with a prototype drone and 24 layperson volunteers.
- The volunteers were helped by a simulated 911 dispatcher.
- Researchers used surveys, video review, and interviews to study how the volunteers interacted with the drone.
Results
- 83% of participants felt comfortable with the drone, and 96% were interested in using it in the future.
- Participants liked the spoken instructions but found the visual cues confusing.
- They could get the medical kit from the drone in about 5 seconds, but some found it hard to get the right equipment from the kit.
Conclusions
Laypeople can interact well with this type of medical drone. Feedback from this study will help improve the drone’s design and provide insights for other drone designers. The medical kit needs more work to make it easier to use.
