Cessation of thumb/finger sucking habit in children using electronic habit reminder versus palatal crib: a randomized clinical pilot study

Study on Stopping Thumb/Finger Sucking in Children

Overview

This study compares two methods to help children stop thumb or finger sucking: an electronic habit reminder and a palatal crib. The study took place over 9 months and included children aged 6 to 14 with this habit that caused dental issues.

Methods

We randomly assigned 22 children into two groups: one used the electronic wristwatch reminder and the other used the palatal crib. We followed up with the children at various intervals to see how effective each method was in stopping the habit.

Results

After the study, 27.3% of children in the electronic reminder group stopped sucking their thumb or finger, compared to 54.5% in the palatal crib group. However, the difference in success rates was not statistically significant.

Parent Feedback

Parents appreciated the instructions and ease of use of both appliances, but again, there was no significant difference in satisfaction levels between the two groups.

Harms

Some issues with the palatal crib included:

  • Gum inflammation, which improved with good oral hygiene.
  • Speech interference, which went away after the child adjusted.
  • Appliance breakage, which was addressed with repairs or replacements.

Conclusion

While both methods were accepted by parents and children, the palatal crib showed a higher success rate in stopping the habit compared to the electronic reminder.
