Chlorhexidine vs Routine Foot Washing to Prevent Diabetic Foot Ulcers
Study Overview
This study aimed to find out if using chlorhexidine wipes daily is better than soap-and-water wipes for preventing foot complications in veterans with diabetes.
Why This Matters
Foot ulcers are a serious concern for people with diabetes. About 20% of these ulcers can get infected, leading to amputations.
Study Details
The trial took place at the Baltimore Veterans Affairs Medical Center from January 2019 to January 2023. Veterans with diabetes who were at high risk for foot complications participated. They were randomly assigned to use either:
- Chlorhexidine wipes
- Soap-and-water wipes
What Was Done
Participants used their assigned wipes on their feet every day for a year. Both groups received the same foot lotion and education on foot care.
Key Findings
Out of 175 participants, only a small number developed new foot complications:
- Chlorhexidine group: 12 participants (14%)
- Control group: 14 participants (16%)
The study found no significant difference in the risk of new foot complications between the two groups.
Conclusion
Using chlorhexidine wipes did not significantly reduce the risk of new foot complications compared to soap-and-water wipes. However, both methods were well tolerated by participants.
Importance for Future Research
This study provides valuable insights for future research on preventing diabetic foot ulcers.
