Cost-effectiveness of school integrated pest management and air filtration in students with asthma

Background

The cost-effectiveness of improving school environments for students with asthma is not well understood. The School Inner City Asthma Intervention Study (SICAS2) was a study that looked at how managing pests and using special air filters can help students with asthma in urban schools.

Objective

The goal of the study was to evaluate how cost-effective these interventions are.

Methods

We compared four different approaches: managing pests, using air filters, combining both methods, and doing nothing. We measured health outcomes using quality-adjusted life years (QALY) and considered all costs involved, including the cost of the interventions, lost productivity from missed school days, and healthcare costs like emergency visits. The study followed participants for about 166 days.

Results

A total of 154 students were part of the study. The costs for each student were:

  • $12.21 for both pest management and air filtration
  • $7.27 for pest management alone
  • $4.94 for air filtration alone

Combining pest management and air filtration was found to be the most cost-effective option, costing about $19,667 per QALY. Additional tests showed that these findings were stable, with variations being minor.

Conclusion

The combination of pest management and air filtration is beneficial and cost-effective, especially for children in urban schools who are often exposed to poor air quality and allergens. This approach can help address health disparities in schools with limited resources.
