Dementia Care Research and Psychosocial Factors
Study Overview
This study, published in Alzheimers Dement, focuses on improving dementia awareness and reducing stigma among healthcare workers and the public.
Background
Many people lack knowledge about dementia, leading to stigma and discrimination. To combat this, we need effective interventions that are based on evidence.
Methodology
We conducted a randomized trial with two groups: the Intervention Group (IG) and the Control Group (CG). The IG, consisting of 70 Community Health Workers, participated in a 9-hour program designed to educate and change attitudes towards dementia. The CG, with 62 participants, did not receive any intervention.
Data Collection
We gathered data on:
- Negative Attitudes: Measured with 8 questions; higher scores indicate more negative attitudes.
- Dementia Knowledge: Measured with 5 questions; higher scores show better knowledge.
- Importance of Diagnosis Disclosure: Measured with one question; higher scores indicate greater perceived importance.
Results
We reevaluated participants at 30 and 90 days after the intervention. Key findings include:
- Significant increase in knowledge for the IG at both follow-ups (p = 0.007 and p = 0.020).
- Significant reduction in negative attitudes for the IG (p < 0.000 and p = 0.000).
Conclusion
The initial results suggest that the intervention is effective in increasing knowledge and reducing negative attitudes about dementia among Community Health Workers. Further analysis is ongoing to enhance this program for future trials.
