Background
This study looked at how certain diabetes medications combined with a high-protein diet and moderate exercise can help people with obesity and newly diagnosed prediabetes or type 2 diabetes lose weight and possibly reverse their diabetes.
Methods
A total of 61 participants with obesity and recent diagnoses were split into two groups. One group received standard treatment (medications and lifestyle advice) for a year, while the other group received the same treatment plus a high-protein diet and moderate exercise routine.
Results
By the end of the study, 60 participants completed the follow-up. In the group that followed the high-protein diet and exercise,:
- 73.33% of those with prediabetes returned to normal blood sugar levels.
- 86.67% of those with type 2 diabetes achieved remission.
In contrast, only 7.69% of the prediabetes group and 16.67% of the diabetes group in the standard treatment achieved remission.
Participants in the intensive treatment group lost an average of 19.29 kg, while those in the standard treatment group lost only 1.52 kg. Other health markers, such as body fat and liver health, also improved significantly in the intensive group.
Conclusions
The combination of diabetes medications, a high-protein diet, and moderate exercise can help a significant number of patients with type 2 diabetes achieve remission.
