Effect of l-arginine compared to placebo on sexual function in women with major depressive disorder: a randomized controlled trial

Effect of l-arginine on Sexual Function in Women with Depression

Background

Research suggests that l-arginine may improve sexual function and alleviate depression, but its effects on women with depression have not been studied concurrently.

Methods

Women diagnosed with major depressive disorder were enrolled in a triple-blind clinical trial. They were divided into two groups: one received l-arginine and the other received a placebo for four weeks. Their depression severity and sexual function were evaluated at baseline, after four and eight weeks.

Results

All patients showed a decrease in depression severity. The group receiving l-arginine showed improvement in sexual function, particularly in lubrication and orgasm, with minimal side effects observed.

Conclusion

L-arginine supplementation can improve sexual function and mood in women with depression. Further research is needed to validate these results with higher dosages and larger populations.
