Effective Counseling for Knee Osteoarthritis: A Study Overview
Objective
This study aimed to see how motivational interviewing-based counseling affects pain, mental health, and self-care in people with knee osteoarthritis.
Methods
We conducted a randomized controlled trial with 60 participants (29 received counseling, 31 were in the control group). We collected data using:
- Personal Information Form
- Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) for pain measurement
- Psychosocial Adjustment to Illness Self-Report Scale
- Self-Care Management Scale in Chronic Diseases
The counseling lasted four weeks for the intervention group, while the control group received standard care. We assessed the participants again after four weeks.
Results
The results showed that:
- Counseling significantly improved psychosocial adjustment.
- Pain levels decreased as shown by lower VAS scores.
- Self-care management improved significantly.
All results were statistically significant (P < .001).
Conclusion
Motivational interviewing-based counseling effectively reduces pain and enhances mental health and self-care in individuals with knee osteoarthritis.
