Effectiveness of High-Intensity Laser Treatment for Partial Supraspinatus Tendon Tears
Study Overview
The most frequent cause of rotator cuff injury is supraspinatus tendon tears (STTs). High-intensity laser therapy (HILT) is a promising non-surgical treatment. This study aimed to compare HILT with ultrasound (US) therapy in patients with partial STTs.
Key Findings
- Fifty patients aged 18-75 with partial STTs were included.
- Patients were randomly assigned to two groups: Group-1 received HILT and Group-2 received US therapy for three weeks.
- Nine patients dropped out, leaving 41 for analysis (20 in Group-1 and 21 in Group-2).
- Both groups experienced significant decreases in pain and disability after treatment.
- However, the HILT group showed better results than the US group at both the 4th and 12th weeks.
- There were no changes in tendon thickness for either treatment.
Conclusion
HILT is more effective than US therapy for reducing pain and improving function in patients with partial STTs. Both treatments did not affect tendon thickness.
